Some extracts from the book . . . .

"Start by looking at the whole area of hills. They might just be a lot of mounds in the first instance but by giving some thought to their location and layout they can tell you a great deal about the activity of the moles in that area. It is important to begin by looking from the boundary (eg hedge) out towards the centre, this way you are more likely to identify the pattern and layout of the hills. Looking from the middle of a field it is often impossible to see the same layouts and decide where to put the traps."

"A mole's tunnels have many junctions and random layouts. It is best to dig along the straightest path provided it seems to be heading in the correct direction. Always check for dead-ends, there is little point setting on those."

"A correctly set trap held ready to place, note the angle of the adjusted trigger loops. If they hang too far towards the centre of the trap the mole can fit his whole body into the trap (beyond the catching loop) before the mechanism is triggered. Trigger loops that are too stiff to be triggered also give the mole space to position himself too far forward in the trap to be caught as he tries to push downwards beneath the trigger loop."

"Place the trap in the run holding it in one hand as shown in the photo. Push down on the trap until the hoops move in the slots . . ."

Let me tell you that an average household garden mole problem usually costs my clients around £100 to get rid of their moles.

I can also tell you that I have clients with large farms who have paid me over £3000 to clear their mole infested farmland.

I don't ask people to pay me by the hour because I am happy enough to be paid by the mole. If I could not catch, I would never make a living.

Here's what some of our trainees have said -

Helen - "I had never heard of mole catching! Now after a few hours of guidance and asking a few questions since, I am quite happy to go out and offer my services to someone with a mole problem. There really is nothing to it, once you know what you need to know. Anyone can learn how to do this"

Alan - "I used to be a fireman, and after a day being shown where to set the traps and how to set them I was away. He fitted me up with the right traps and showed my why he used that particular type. It's not the pleasantest of jobs on a wet day but I do find it really rewarding when I count my catch."

Meirion - "I must admit I thought I knew how to catch moles, I'd quite happily been catching the odd one here and there for many years. However, since seeing his way of doing it I've thrown out my old traps, adopted the new techniques, followed the 'rules' for the number of traps I set. And now, I've definately moved up a few gears! My gardening business goes quiet over the winter so a few days a week catching moles makes a great substitute for the lack of lawns to cut."
